We have observed an unprecedented increase in requests from both commercial owners and upstream/downstream petroleum operators for remedial applications involving the use of fracture-enhanced chemical oxidation and injection technologies to mitigate long standing environmental site liabilities in Alberta. Frac Rite was involved in some of its largest projects to date involving the use of surfactant pre-treatment followed by dual-oxidant chemical treatment to effectively destroy hydrocarbon residuals underlying both soil and bedrock sites. Some of the chemical treatment work involved hydraulic fracturing to establish injection flowpaths for subsequent chemox treatment; other sites used the existing well infrastructure for direct injection into permeable sediments. Frac Rite has positioned itself to be the leader in the provision of safe and effective fracture-emplacement and/or injection of chemical oxidants in Canada by virtue of its custom designed chemox injection equipment, operational protocols, and experience in the emplacement of virtually every commercially available chemical oxidant used for remedial applications, as slurries, solids, and solutions.

Frac Rite’s U.S. and Canadian companies were both represented at the biannual Conference on the Remediation of Chlorinated and Recalcitrant Compounds in Monterey, California. Frac Rite Remediation personnel, based in Mesquite, Texas was exhibiting the advanced in situ emplacement technologies of the Frac Rite group of companies, while Gordon Bures, Vice-President of Frac Rite Environmental in Calgary, Alberta, was a platform presenter of two fracturing case studies in Canada and the U.S. Both presentations showcased unprecedented applications of hydraulic fracturing in both bedrock and low-permeability soil remediation, including underneath existing above-ground & underground buildings and infrastructure. Fracturing was coupled with both abiotic/biotic reductive dehalogenation of TCE contaminants, and chemical oxidation of PCE contamination. Results were extremely impressive at both sites, so much so that the US EPA presented a summary of the findings over two years on their CLU IN website on Technology News and Trends – December 2010, Issue 51 "USACE Integrates Fracturing and Iron/Carbon Injections at Colorado Site". This summary can be downloaded off of their website at http://www.clu-in.org/products/newsltrs/tnandt/ pdf file.

Frac Rite proudly announces the latest addition to our fracturing and injection fleet, the EFI2000 Permeation – Injection unit. This equipment was designed and fabricated in house specifically to meet the increasing demand for injection of a wide variety of solution based oxidants and bio-amendments from a small, portable operational platform. However, unlike other service providers who only represent or inject certain brands of treatment reagents, Frac Rite has no vested interest in any particular treatment product over another. We have therefore designed our equipment to accomodate the fullest range possible of treatment amendments, having emplaced and mapped the subsurface distribution of virtually every commercially available remedial treatment product from zero valent iron to lactates, surfactants, soy oils, all manner of slurry and solution oxidants, including nano-peroxides. In addition, we have designed our own proprietary operational protocols for the safe and effective delivery of these treatment amendments into subsurface environments, including bedrock.

Gypsum is a soft mineral that occurs in abundance across the Arabian Peninsula and in Oman and Saudi Arabia in particular. It has one unique property, which is its ability to hold large quantities of water; trillions of litres may be locked into deposits across the region. Our team, led by H.I.T. in Rotterdam, have devised a strategy using fracturing and proprietary extraction technology for a field pilot implementation to extract water from gypsum formations. This research pilot is currently being considered for funding by interested parties in Oman, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Frac Rite and their Korean licensee, TRIUM Solutions, Inc. were invited by the ROK Army to conduct a pilot demonstration project for the remediation of a diesel- contaminated military base in South Korea using frac-permeation technology. The work was conducted in June and July of 2009 and involved the fracture-emplacement and permeation of modified Fentons Reagent to mitigate Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon impacts in soil to below applicable land use clean-up criteria. Third party validation demonstrated that initial soil contaminant concentrations approaching 10,000 mg/kg were reduced to well below the remediation criteria of 2,000 mg/kg within two months. The success of this demonstration project resulted in the adoption of frac-permeation treatment as the only sanctioned in situ remediation technology permitted at South Korean military sites.

(BEST) is a leader in the environmental brownfield and contracting field through the use of advanced technologies and decades of experience in site remediation. BEST is working very closely with OXY Teknologies and Frac Rite to research and develop new and improved methods of solution- oxidant delivery into challenging soil conditions to expedite the in situ remediation of soil and groundwater impacted by a variety of petroleum and chlorinated hydrocarbons. Recent applications at sites in Ontario have demonstrated the improved delivery efficiencies and cost-effectiveness of our advanced in situ approach to bring contaminated properties to site-closure.
